Following the national COVID-19 lockdown that was iimplemented by the Ugandan government as a way of preventing the spread of the pandemic, commercial sex workers were among the category of the population that was severely affected especially the single mothers in addition to living with HIV/AIDS. The fact that the national lockdown was maintained among the bar operations, hotels, lodges and strict regulations imposed on truck drivers, these actions negatively impacted on the livelihood of this population by putting their young children at risk of malnutrition because they had no source of income to provide for their families whilst they themselves unable to keep on ARV drugs due to lack of basic human needs such as food.
Given the above background, SAIL Uganda with funding support from AHF implemented an emergency relief intervention involving the distribution of food and hygiene items to 173 commercial sex workers in the five divisions of Kampala Capital City Authority, namely; Nakawa, Rubaga, Kawempe, Makindye and Kampala Central.
Highlight of Activities undertaken:
- Contacting CSW team leaders to identify key beneficiaries
- Procuring items for distribution of basic foods: Rice, posho, beans, sugar, cooking oil, soya porridge
- Procuring items for distribution of Hygiene items: Liquid soap, bar soap, sanitary pads.
- Procuring items for distribution of Prevention items: Masks, Thermometer.
- Procuring items for distribution of Packing and branding items
- Procuring items for distribution of Sensitization and Distribution of items to beneficiaries
