The Covid-19 pandemic outbreak and indefinite closure of schools and community gatherings has affected social behavioral change communication through community theatre for SRHR & HIV prevention and improved health among youths in and out of school.
SAIL Uganda decided to substitute the live drama performances to young people out of school with recorded audio drama skits to be aired to 20 selected markets in Rubaga and Kawempe Divisions using public address system to enhance COVID-19 prevention and control, sexual reproductive health rights (SRHR), HIV, and Gender based violence (GBV).
SAIL Uganda will work with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) as one of the taskforce teams in the country to ensure that communities and more so market vendors who are among those that have been allowed to operate during the lockdown benefit from these recorded skits so that they are empowered with relevant correct and accurate information. This is to enhance and reinforce visibility and continuity of the campaign messages.
Recently, SAIL Uganda reached out to 2000 market vendors and 1000 customers within 20 selected markets. Using audio recordings, the organisation delivered correct and accurate prevention messages on prevention and control of COVID-19, Gender Based Violence, sexual & reproductive health rights and corona virus stigma.
The organization the standard operating procedures of observing social distance and thereafter act as change agents. This was conducted successfully by hiring a Public Address System alongside the Ministry of health film van.
Following the national COVID-19 lockdown that was iimplemented by the Ugandan government as a way of preventing the spread of the pandemic, commercial sex workers were among the category of the population that was severely affected especially the single mothers in addition to living with HIV/AIDS. The fact that the national lockdown was maintained among the bar operations, hotels, lodges and strict regulations imposed on truck drivers, these actions negatively impacted on the livelihood of this population by putting their young children at risk of malnutrition because they had no source of income to provide for their families whilst they themselves unable to keep on ARV drugs due to lack of basic human needs such as food.
